 Abstract:  James Horton (1934-2005) was an employee of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 47, in Cleveland, Ohio. During his career with SEIU he served in many capacities including organizer, business agent, negotiator, vice-president, and president.  Abstract:  Stella G. White was a free lance journalist, columnist for the Plain Dealer newspaper, and community leader in Cleveland, Ohio. Married first to Judge Charles W. White of Cleveland, she later became the wife of Curtis Lamar Bigham and resided in Dawsonville, Georgia. While in Dawsonville, she was a columnist for The Forum. She was instrumental in the Dawson County, Georgia, courthouse renovation project, and active in the Dawson County Women's Club. The collection consists of resumes, certificates, columns, newspaper clippings, correspondence, military documents, speeches, genealogical materials, book manuscripts, cancer research material, and memorabilia. These papers pertain primarily to White's career as a free lance journalist for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio, and as a columnist for The Forum in Dawsonville, Georgia. It also includes some of her other writings. Most of her columns centered around the subject of race relations, housing, legislation, and health care.

 Abstract:  Charles Beard was born in Georgia and raised in Newport, Rhode Island. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during World War II, serving as a fighter pilot, after training at Tuskegee Air Force Base. In 1945, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Western Reserve University. In 1946, he served as a junior city planner for the City Planning Commission, and in the 1950s worked for the Cleveland Urban Renewal Agency. In the late 1950s, he was promoted to Chief City Planner for Cleveland, and in the 1960s, became the Director of Plan of Action for Tomorrow's Housing (PATH). From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, he held a position as a government liaison with the Federation for Community Planning. He also was founder of the Friends of Shaker Square and Fair Housing, Inc. He helped organize the North Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., in 1993. The collection consists of reports, speeches, proposals, correspondence, agendas, annual reports, financial statements, newsletters, notes, ordinances, bibliographies, booklets, tables, pamphlets, publications, lists, and maps. The majority of the material relates to Beard's career as Chief City Planner for the City Planning Commission.

 Abstract:  East End Neighborhood House was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1907. It originally offered domestic skills classes and recreational activities to new immigrants principally from Hungary. The Center is a social settlement/community center serving Cleveland's Buckeye-Woodland-Woodhill community. Hungarian during the first half of the century, this area became largely Black during the 1960s and 1970s. Throughout this period, the center adjusted its activities to meet the needs of the area and also to take advantage of newly available federal funds. The programs reflected increased attention to the needs of senior citizens and also included expanded daycare programs and mental-health programs. The collection consists of minutes of the Board of Trustees, membership lists, corporate documents, personnel and director search records, general correspondence, financial records, and general program descriptions and budget statements. The collection pertains to the center's operation and includes material relating to its financial crisis, 1974-76, its search for a black director, and the changing racial composition of the area served by the center.

He was interested in political issues and wrote to a number of mayors, congressmen, and senators. The collection consists of correspondence relating to Horton's union activities, collective agreements which he helped to negotiate, material relating to the Eddy Road Street Club, letters from prominent public officials, and Horton's various awards and certificates of achievement.

The BICCA was a committee of the Greater Cleveland Associated Foundation, which provided funding, services, and facilities. Additional financial support was supplied by local corporations.  Abstract:  Arthur and Murtis Taylor were community leaders active in Cleveland, Ohio, African American organizations. They both worked at Karamu House and Outhwaite Homes Housing Project. Arthur then became an insurance underwriter and Murtis became director of Mount Pleasant Community Center and coordinator of the Federation for Community Planning's Project on Aging. Their son Bruce was a biomedical engineer researching artificial arteries at Akron City Hospital. Their son Howard became associate professor of sociology at Syracuse University in 1969. The entire family was named Outstanding Family of the Year in 1968 by the Urban League. The collection includes biographical items, correspondence, clippings, writings by Murtis, Bruce, and especially, Howard F. Taylor, and miscellany, including a marriage license, programs and certificates. The collection pertains largely to the careers and community activities of a Cleveland Afro-American family and includes some materials on social work, sociology, and medicine. Included is Howard's dissertation: Balance and tension in the two-person group.

 Abstract:  The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1854 with a program of lectures, prayer meetings, a Sunday school and a lending library. It initially focused on missionary and religious work. By 1880 the emphasis shifted toward character development and broadened to include boys as well as men, offering educational and physical training programs. During the 20th century the Y worked with the city's social settlements and welfare agencies, conducted fundraising campaigns during World War I, and increased its efforts to work with young boys. By the 1980s there were over 20 branches in the Cleveland area. The collection consists of minutes of the Cedar Avenue Boys' Branch, 1922-1977; also, general files of the Central YMCA, 1880-1975; publications and reports, including some issues of the Cleveland Red Triangle, the Association Boy, the Junior, News and Notes, and the West Side Boy; East End Branch scrapbook, 1929-1930; Cleveland surveys and studies, 1931-1962; Fenn College publications and reports, 1896-1938; War Work Week scrapbook, 1917; and miscellany. The collection pertains to the activities of the YMCA, including efforts at religious and missionary work, development of character in urban youth, war work, and alleviation of depression-era unemployment. The Cedar Avenue Branch records in particular document the Y's effort to serve Cleveland's black community, beginning in 1922.

The Cleveland Health Care Alternatives, Inc. was founded in 1985 and was made up of health care providers in the University Circle, area, including the Glenville Health Association. The collection consists of board of trustees minutes, brochures, newspaper clippings, and advertisements of the Glenville Health Association. Also included are minutes, 1985-1986, for the Operating Committee of the Cleveland Health Care Alternatives, Inc., an association of health care providers in the University Circle area of Cleveland offering services to persons on medical assistance.

 Abstract:  Roderick Boyd Porter served as the Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Archivist (1973-1985) and was active in neighborhood redevelopment and historic preservation in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. Porter also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Western Reserve Historical Society, as a trustee of the Cleveland Area Arts Council, and a member of the Rowfant Club. He was a member of the North Coast Village Steering Committee in the 1980s, which played a key role in the Lexington Village project and revitalization efforts in the Hough area community of Cleveland, Ohio.  Abstract:  Carl Stokes (1927-1996) was the Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, from 1967-1971. Stokes was the first African American mayor of a major American city and the first African American Democrat in the Ohio State Legislature, where he served three terms from 1962-1967. As mayor, Stokes launched a number of programs to alleviate the problems of urban decay. Chief among these was Cleveland: NOW!, a joint public and private program with plans to raise $177 million in its first two years to revitalize Cleveland. The program was discredited due to the Glenville Shootout in July, 1968. Under Stokes, Cleveland City Council passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Ordinance, and HUD resumed funding projects aiding in the construction of over 3,000 new low- and middle-income housing units. Stokes became a newscaster with NBC television in 1972, and returned to his law practice in Cleveland in 1980. In 1983, Stokes was elected a municipal court judge. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the political career of Carl B. Stokes, including his terms in the Ohio State legislature, his mayoral campaigns, and particularly his tenure as mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. The collection details the organization of the mayor's office, and illustrates the problems that Blacks in the vanguard of social and political progress faced, as well as the challenges faced by any urban leader in the turbulent 1960s and early 1970s. Key events in Stokes' administration are illustrated, including the Glenville Shootout, the hiring and resignation of Safety Director Gen. Ben Davis, the activities of the Mayor's Council on Youth Opportunities, and Cleveland: NOW! The work of then City Council President James Stanton is represented, along with material relating to Stokes' brother Louis. Notable correspondents include Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, Robert F. Kennedy, Spiro Agnew, Cyrus Eaton, Edward Kennedy, George Forbes, Jesse Jackson, and Howard Metzenbaum.

 Abstract:  James Horton (b. 1934) was the business representative for the Building Service and Maintenance Union, Local 47, Cleveland, Ohio. He helped the union organize workers in several Cleveland hospitals and nursing homes. The collection consists of mimeograph letters from Local 47 of the Building Service and Maintenance Union to hospitals, nursing homes, other unions, and union members concerning meetings, strikes, recruitment of members, and organizing procedures. Also included are collective bargaining agreements, copies of newspaper clippings on the union and James Horton, personal papers of Mr. Horton, and printed materials concerning his band (1955-1974).
